John Barry’s romantic score for Somewhere in Time receives a fresh orchestral performance on this 1998 recording, featuring the Royal Scottish National Orchestra conducted by John Debney. Composed for the 1980 film, the music captures its atmosphere of longing, nostalgia, and romance through lyrical melodies and expressive orchestration. This release presents a newly recorded interpretation of Barry’s film score. (filmmusic.com)
Selections include “Somewhere in Time,” “Grand Hotel,” “The Attic,” “Near the Lake,” and “Somewhere in Time (End Credits).” The album also features music from Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, with pianist Lynda Cochrane credited on the accompanying artwork. Gentle piano passages and sweeping strings give the collection an intimate, reflective character.
An appealing addition for John Barry collectors, film music enthusiasts, and listeners who enjoy melodic orchestral recordings, this CD offers the score as a standalone listening experience. Its illustrated cover complements the period romance associated with Somewhere in Time.
